Who should be the next Tibetan Prime Minister in 2011?

Eleven pre-selected candidates are all capable tibetans that have proven their inspirational and leadership skills. They live in three different continents (Asia, United States and Europe), represent three provinces of Tibet, and both lay and monastic traditions.

*Update*  Tashi Wangdi has requested to be removed from this list, he encourages everyone to support the “upcoming younger generation” of Tibetan candidates for the Kalon Tripa position. We have now removed his name from the list (he had recieved 17 votes at the time of removal). Read more about this in the comments section.

*Update* Following a request, Lobsang Palden Tawo (Germany) has been added to the poll.

You must add Tethong Tenzin Namgyal lak and though some of your nominees are good but too young and without serving or having experience of exile govt. is not a good candidate. Specially I support Mr. Tashi Wangdi lak but his age and health will support him or not thats a big question other wise he is the best canditate.

    Hi friend.
I am happy to see that you organized this program, it can give an idea to those people who are still in confusions in choosing the next PM of our exile govt, this issue is a very important issue, it directly impact on our future policy and the fate of Tibet in coming years. so we really should to take it seriously and not consider it as a game which we often did.
I, personally think that the next PM of Tibet should need a man who is multi-talented and who is knowing most of the things that related to Tibet, like both the internal and external. politically and economically. specially legal laws,
Even though, there is saying goes like this,” old is gold” but it can not be applied in every where, specially in our critical society. we need young and educated man to lead us. but not need a old man to guide us on the basis of his experiences, things are keeping in change, yesterday can never substitute tomorrow.
So, I think we should think about it, and decide it in a very rational manner I think Lobsang sangal is the best man be our next PM
    thanking you

What an !dea Sir ji… I think we need leader with vision not any scholar. I will not mention any name. Naming your candidates is like your trying to convince others. We all are capable to think and make decisions. So, best of luck to all of us. Bhogyalo!!!

  5. Choephel Dhekhabaro says:

This is very timely and very valuable effort so that someone who cares and dares and has the appropriate intellectual wherewithal and integrity succeeds in leading us.

  6. Tenzin says:

I am not satisfied with this short-listed candidate. There are candidates who have never worked in the Central TIbetan Administration or alike. Prime Minister can’t be someone who have no administrative background or knowledge in the government set-up. We don’t want leaders who can talk well but a leader who can lead well. I hope this helps.

Hats off for the initiative of listing some eligible candidates for Katri2011…however in this 21st century, we don’t need people to spoon feed us. We all are capable of choosing the eligible person for Katri. How long do we have to depend on others for providing us the list of candidates for Katri…habits die hard! We are used to thinking for others…or depending on others for every little bit. However, I am not against anyone of the candidates listed here. All of them are honorable and respectable people in our community. A big BUT is people from West only capable for Katri? This is my question here. For Katri we need someone who has lived and felt the pulse of the people living in India and not someone who has left us when we most needed by choosing to go to West for greener pasture and then when a coveted position like becoming a Kalon Tripa of the community, then like a vulture hover for that position…Why is someone working in Exile govt not eligible for Kalon Tripa…Why is his/her name not proposed? Lets stop being chauvinistic by assuming everything about “West” is good and a model to follow. Someone who has little fluency in English and an exposure is not just enough a criteria for leading us and for the seat of Kalon Tripa! We need someone who could undersand the culture here and act accordingly and not replicate what one does in the West and impose it on us. Instead of leading us, this person can cause friction since he/she works on assumption…that everything is good about West! Please think twice…thrice…multifold…to choose someone from India who has tanned his/her skin under the scorching sun of India…who had lived without electricity and water for days…who had gone in ordinary train & buses…who had lived without aircondition in a hot day…who had walked miles to do common work…who had known what it is being living in a one room bed…A person like this can understand our people and formulate policy to our needs…and not based on policy borrowed from West…who has used Indian style bathroom…blah …blah! My countrymen awake, arise and vote with your own thinking…don’t get swayed by the list produced by others….Question, Know, Check their moral charater, Test if they really have the altruistic bent of mind or are they just thinking for the post…these are some of the things we need to study before we come to our conclusion….

  8. Dukar gyatso says:

Shock to see Lobsang sangay as Kalon Tripas nominee.Think twice before you vote.We are looking for someone who could lead the Tibetan People not someone who can talk on radio.I don’t understand why people nominate him. Please let us know why Lobsang Sangay is eligable to be a candidate?

  9. Phuntsok says:

    Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Katri Rinpoche has laid a very strong and a good foundation of clean governance and also of not misusing exile govt’s facilities for the Ministers or Secretaries of the TGIE as well as a clean culture to deal with any Indian govt offices or anyone to do with Tibetan work by discouraging bribes…So whoever becomes a Kalon Trip must have this characteristics in the person himself so that he/she could lead us in the same light. Any one who is aspering for this post must be mindful of this value, otherwise our government can’t be a model for others…Being a Buddhist community, we have to set trend in this regard. In this aspect, I am requesting my bretherns to nominate someone who hold this ideal before anything else…and not vote someone who is used to giving bribe or accepting bribe or nepotism etc. For me this is one of the main criteria for becoming a Katri. Corrupted and working like Indian politicans will have no place for Katri. So awake and study how each of these had become popular in our community. If anyone of them had made himself/herself popular by adopting this strategy, should be discarded from this list. You are misleading people thinking they are all honorable people.

  10. Yulu says:

Your list is appreciative and inspiring…I’d like you to add Mr. Pema Jungney who had served for 20 plus years as a member of Tibetan Parliament in Exile and had been the Speaker of TPiE from 2002 to 2007 (if I remember correctly). It is for the people to vote their eligible candidate but it is our duty to give opportunity to all those who had studied the nook and corner of the TGiE. Thanks!

As soon as I noticed my name being mentioned as a 2011 Kalon Tripa candidate I emailed the President of Norway Tibetan Community requesting him to withdraw my name. My name is still on the list and a few have even voted for me. I am grateful to them but I would like to share with the readers the following email I sent:

Dear President of Norway Tibetan Community,
I have just seen your email and Kalon Tripa nomination website you have posted.
First of all I really appreciate the proactive interest you and your
friends have taken in this very important matter for our future. It is
our common responsibility to ensure the best person is elected as our
Kalon Tripa. Secondly I would like to request you to withdraw my name
from the list. I am grateful for the trust reposed in me but know
myself that I am not fit for the most important responsibility. I have
tried to serve to the best of my ability for nearly four decades and I
am now too old for the job. I have said the same thing to well
intentioned individuals and groups who had approached me in recent
times. I do not want people to waste their vote. We must concentrate
on the upcoming younger generation. I know there are some very
promising and experienced individuals as reflected in your list. We
must put our minds together and I have no doubt we will find the best
Kalon Tripa through the democratic process to lead us into the 21st
    century.
    Best regards,
    Tashi Wangdi

  12. tenzin wangpo says:

i think tenzin namgyal tethong and karma choephel both are perfect for next kalon tripa, bcoz they have very good experience in tibetan govt.

  13. Thupten Gyatzo says:

I believe you need to keep an open mind, read about the people, investigate, evaulate, and then decide who can best represent our nation.
I have also realized many people debating whether education or experience could out weigh the other and I believe both are equally important however leading a our complex government in exile will need someone more with a sound set of skills and experience.

  14. Bhuchung K Tsering says:

Dear President of Norway Tibetan Community,

Today, Mr. Karma Yeshi of the Voice of Tibet drew my attention to this website, specifically because you have included my name. I admire and appreciate your effort at creating awareness. In my own way I have tried to do that through my blogs, http://www.tibetreport.wordpress.com as well as http://www.boepa.wordpress.com.

However, kindly delete my name as I have no intention of competing for this exalted position. My strength lies in serving the community in other ways.

Dear fellow Tibetans, I hope all of you are thinking very carefully about Kalon Tripa and Chithue Election. As for example, a lot people think Mr, Lobsang Sangye la is the best candidate for the next Kalon Tripa. I am a Lobsang Sangye fan but I don’t think it not a good time for us to elect Mr, Sangye for the next Kalon Tripa because reason one he has never served Tibetan Government and he has no experience what so ever. Reason two he has been doing a great job at Haward University educating others about the Tibet situation and Tibet cause which no Tibetan can do but Mr, Sangye la himself. So if Mr, Sangye la leave Haward University, we have no one there that can do what Mr, Sangye la has been doing. Now Chithue election we have to elect some good people that some Chisem and Lhaksam not ones we saw in the DVD. Those selfcentered ones should be voted out. I call those people real splitist in our society. Why do they have fight between Cholka Sum when our country is occupied by a Terrorist Regime like Evil China????? So for Chithue, Vote in the uniter and vote out the splitist ones.

This Katri election is exciting and Tibetans of all generation are being more involved. This is a crucial period in our Tibetan political history, and we cannot afford to put parochial interests ahead of what Tibet/Tibetans need. We need a Katri who is competent, proven his/herleadership and through his/her years of service shown devotion and dedication for the cause… Personally, my vote is for Tenzin Namgyal Tethong la!

My vote in the next Katri Election will be for Lobsang Sangay -well, if he chooses to gain more experience in working for and understanding the TGIE system and not just talk about tingmo and dal he ate (yummy!!!!)

Ok….but we got to also think about our Chitue Election. We need a group that is dedicated and not divided! For North America Chitue I would vote for Tashi Namgyalla-(Tanam)

  18. This is a much needed initiative if you consider Mr,Phurbu Drjee la’s dedicated and successful service to the Tibetan community for so many years. Great that finally his supporters are campaigning for him through this website. We Tibetans tend to forget all those who made our lives easier and are swayed easily by witty and boisterous rhetoric. I hope Tibetans will make an informed choice
